Onyewu to stay with Standard for now

US defender Oguchi Onyewu or 'the Gooch' (pictured) will stay in Belgian with Standard Liege instead of moving to English Premier League team Middlesbrough.

Middlesbrough was impressed with the Gooch during the World Cup, but he turned down the move because they could not agree to some of the details in the contract.

However, there is a chance the details might be worked out in time for the next transfer window.

The Belgian league is a good second tier league, but the Gooch would be best served in a top league like the EPL. Hopefully the details will be worked out and he will be in England come mid-season.
