The changing face of European soccer

Kevin McCarra has a great piece about the big change happening this year in Europe.

He points out the difficulty the old powers of the game are having in qualify as well as the power shown by new comers. He mainly points out the problems of France in comparison to the results the Ukraine has put up. Could the center of soccer power really be moving to the East?

It shouldn't really be seen as moving to the east, but some of the power moving back to the east. After all Czecheslovakia and Yugoslavia were good teams before they split up. They had a down time in the 1990s but now the split countries are re-engaging as soccer powers - Croatia, Serbia, Czech Republic, and Slovakia are all coming back to claim their positions now that their economies are back in order.
