Trash talk continues
The game might be over, but the talk continues.
After Mexico's defeat by the US, their coach Ricardo LaVolpe complained that, "Here, everyone's interested in baseball and American football and many people didn't even know that a soccer match was being played today, so it's easy for them, because they aren't playing under any pressure. My mother, my grandmother or my great grandmother could play in a team like that."
I don't know if it is a smart move by LaVolpe to point out that he and his team have trouble playing under pressure, but I do understand his point. The US doesn't have to worry about a massive outcry if they fail because, honestly, that's what most Americans expect to happen. I think this will change as the team improves, but for now Bruce Arena and the boys will get a pass.
That said, the lack of pressure could also be a bad thing. If your nation is not pushing you, then you have to push yourself. So it goes either way.
But not all the trash talk was from the Tricolors. Landon Donovan let his thoughts be known by telling reports that, "they suck." I know his team had just beaten them and all, but to say Mexico sucks is a bit much. This is a team that beat Brazil just a couple months back, so maybe Donovan was over reaching here.
"I just hate all the talking, all the blah blah they always talk," Donovan told Mexican reporters. "(Mexicans) think they're the best, even though we've beaten them over and over. Hopefully this shuts them up." Yes, America has been the better side more often then not during the last 6 years, but I think there is still one big thing we need to do before we can brag like this; we need to win in Mexico. Till that happens, maybe everyone should be a little more on the humble side of things.
