Gold Cup Semifinals Preview and Predictions

And then there were four. It has come down to the regular couple, an upstart and an 'out-of nowhere' side to decide our confederation's championship. Will tonight end with the expected advancing or will a new path be paved?

Canada vs. USA
7pm ET/4pm PT - Chicago, Ill.
TV: Fox Soccer Channel, TeleFutura

Oh Canada, can you stop the mighty US? The Maple Leafs looked strong against Guatemala on Saturday because they know how to open up space and no one seems afraid of taking a shot. For the US to counter this wind from the North they will need to first and foremost shutdown Julian De Guzman. He is their control man in the middle who plays a huge role in their attacks. If he is given time, he will find Dewayne De Rosario and Ali Gerba and then it will all come down to the Nats backline.

One big weakness on the Canadian side is their poor first touches. If the US acts fast and play close, they should be able to poke more then a few of them away, stopping any pressure before it has a chance to become dangerous.

Against Panama, the USA was able to do a great job of maintaining possession of the ball and they will need to do the same tonight, however it will really come down to finishing. The number of chances Panama gave the US to put the game away was ridiculous. Canada will not be so generous. Donovan, Dempsey and whoever else will need to get it on frame.

Canada is a much-improved squad, but the US is still stronger at every position, so it is their game to loose. On a side note, I wonder if the team comes out flat again at the start of the second half. It seems that the first 10-minutes of the second half were some of the best under Arena but have been some of the worst under Bradley.

Predicted lineup:
GK: Howard
D: Simek, Onyewu, Bocanegra, Bornstein
M: Bradley, Mastroeni, Beasley, Donovan
F: Dempsey, Johnson

Predictions: Me Canada 1-3 USA, Wife Canada 0-2 USA

Guadalupe vs. Mexico
10pm ET/ 7pm PT - Chicago, Ill
TV: Univision

The Mexican fans were cheering for Guadalupe on Sunday against Honduras but that joy might just come back and bite them tonight. Mexico played poorly against a 10-man Costa Rica side for over 45-minutes, but was able to get a goal in overtime to move on. The odd thing was even when two additional players were sent off for Costa Rica, Mexico could not dominate. The reason, they are slow up top, a muddle in the middle and weak on defense. All of these things allow opponents to sneak in and get some great chances, it just takes a little patience and if there is something Guadalupe has in large amount, it is patience.

Don't get me wrong, El Tri has enough talent to win this match and are nowhere near being underdogs, but they have been weak the whole Gold Cup and a Cinderella team might be all that is needed to knock them out.
Predictions: Me Guadalupe 1-2 Mexico, Wife Guadalupe 0-1 Mexico

Gold Cup Quarterfinals Previews and Predictions

At long last the Concacaf Gold Cup is at the knockout phase is here. The eight teams playing this weekend are a great mix of what Concacaf has to offer. We have the regulars (USA, Mexico, Costa Rica), the up and comers (Canada, Honduras) and a little surprise (Guadeloupe). None of these games look like blowouts in the making so we should be in for a great couple days of soccer.

Panama vs. USA
Saturday - 4pmET/1pm PT - Foxborough, Mass
TV: Fox Soccer Channel (English), Envision (Spanish)
Panama learned something against Mexico that I think they will use against the US, attack, attack, attack. Just sitting back and waiting for the pain is not a way to win a match against a big team because if you give them enough chances, they are going to beat you. Even with Panama missing some key players (including their captain Rolando Escobar), they have some strong skills in the midfield and some keen eyes on the attack. Also, they know how to beat defenders on the run thus either getting a shot or forcing a foul. The one weakness in their game is their backline as they often miss their marks.

The US will need a great day in the midfield to disrupt the Panamanian service, but they will also need their defense to stay close without over reaching. The US has given away some dangerous fouls in their final third, but has not yet paid for it. If they give Panama a few of those, it will be a long day for the Nats.

The offense for the red, white and blue is coming together. They still don't make the best use out of the set pieces (I think they only have one goal from a set piece so far), which could become a big factor if Panama does decide to bunker down, but they are getting better at setting each other up during the actual run of play. That said, the last game saw a number of good balls sent in by Beasley, but too often their were either not enough US players in the box or they were not in the correct position to connect.

Predicted lineup:
GK: Howard
D: Bornstein, Parkhurst, DeMerit, Simek
M: Beasley, Clark, Feilhaber, Ralston
F: Donovan, Dempsey
I would not start Gooch because he is riding a yellow card and Panama seems like a team that could easily get him another card. Also, I would go with Clark instead of Bradley in the middle because he pushes the ball forward better.

Predictions: Me Panama 0-2 US, Wife Panama 1-2 US

Canada vs. Guatemala
Saturday - 1pm ET/10am PT - Foxborough, Mass
TV: Telefutra (Spanish)
There will be two very different styles of soccer on display in this one as Canada likes to play wide-open games while Guatemala does everything they can do to stop a soccer match from actually taking place. There is talent on Guatemala's team, but their bunker and foul while Carlos Ruiz takes a dive routine wastes it.

Talking about Ruiz, he is really the only offensive threat his side has, so if Canada control him and don't get frustrated by his total disrespect for the game he plays, they should be in good shape. However, Ruiz has this way of sneaking into space and pushing defenders off him. If he gets a ref who turns a blind eye to these sorts of things, he will cause some problems.

The Maple Leafs will need a great day from their double De's in the middle. DeGuzman and DeRosario will need to control the flow and prevent Guatemala from stopping every play at the half way line. Also, Canada's biggest weakness might end up coming in handy during this match. Many of their first touches are weak and often result in the ball getting away from players for a moment. Since Guatemala usually kneecaps players on their first touch, they might end up getting cards because the ball will not be there to provide an excuse for this fouls.

This one will get physical, but if Canada says calm, they will advance.
Prediction: Me Canada 1-0 Guatemala, Wife Canada 2-1 Guatemala

Honduras vs. Guadeloupe
Sunday 3pm ET/12pm PT - Houston, Tx
TV: Telefutra (Spanish)
Los Catrachos has got to be feeling great about their chances in this one. Guadeloupe had a wonderful first match, got a little lucky in the second and fell flat in their third as the team started looking exhausted. The one bit of good news is they have had five days off so they should be in a better place, but their depth is still lacking. To pull out a shock result, they will need to control the attacking duo of Carlos Pavón and Carlos Costly but I haven't seen anything in their defense that suggests such a result is possible.

It is always fun to cheer for the little guy and Guadeloupe, with a population of about 400,000, is the littlest of all, but sadly, I think Sunday will see them get crushed.
Predictions: Honduras 3-1 Guadeloupe, Wife Honduras 1-2 Guadeloupe

Mexico vs. Costa Rica
Sunday 6pm ET/3pm PT - Houston, Tx
TV: Univision (Spanish)
This might just be the game that decides coach Hugo Sanchez’s future. El Tri has looked bad through all three of the group matches and is very lucky to not be facing the USA today. Since they have a very talented squad one must wonder why they are not doing better. That's where Hugo pops in.

Costa Rica has been third best team in Concacaf for a number of years now but their age is starting to show. The flair and speed on the ball is not what it once was so the question is do they have enough for one more run? Los Ticos has the benefit of a Mexican side in disarray and missing a couple starters due to card accumulation. However, they will also have to face Oswaldo Sanchez in goal.

If Mexico's backline continues their resent tradition of leaving huge holes open, Costa Rica will get some great chances, but they will have to place them just right because Sanchez might not have a lot of class, but he can stop just about anything except perfectly placed shots.

Mexico will probably find a way to pull this one out but I think there is going to be one upset this weekend and it will happen in Houston.
Prediction: Me Mexico 1-2 Costa Rica (in overtime), Wife Mexico 2-0 Costa Rica

The quarterfinal winners will advance to the semi-finals in Chicago on Thursday night. The winners from Foxborough will place each other followed by the winners from Houston.

2007 Gold Cup Quarterfinals Schedule

The group stage is done and now it is knockout time. All four of these matches should be interesting to watch because even the underdogs have pulled off a number of surprises.

If you are in or around Foxborough or Houston, why not go see the games in person. One ticket gets you into both quarterfinal games on the day, plus in Foxborough you will also get a MLS match featuring the New England Revolution. It could make a great Father's Day gift.

Anyway, here is a quick look at the four games:
Quarterfinals Day 1 - Saturday - Foxborough
Tickets
Canada (A1) v Guatemala (B2)
1pm ET/10am PT - TV: Telefutra (Spanish)
Canada surprised a few with their top-flight finish in Group C, but still have a few holes to fill. Guatemala played their regular ugly style of soccer and managed to squeeze through. If there is a good ref, Canada should be alright but if the Blue & White get to crap tackle their way around the pitch and do everything they can to prevent a soccer match from breaking out, it will be difficult for the maple leafs.

USA (B1) v Panama (C3)
4pm ET/ 1pm PT - TV: Fox Soccer Channel (English), Univision (Spanish)
The way Mexico has been playing, it would have been something wonderful to face them on Saturday instead of a real hot Panama side. The US should not undervalue Panama, even with two players out due to reds. They will pressure the defense and can be tricky in the middle. If you live in the Northeast and missed out on Germany last year, this match might just make up for it.

Quarterfinals Day 2 - Sunday - Houston
Tickets
Honduras (C1) v Guadeloupe (A3)
3pm ET/12pm PT - TV: Telefutra (Spanish)
Honduras is clicking while Guadeloupe is fading. Of all four matches, this one has the greatest likelihood of being a blowout, but it might also provide a bit of a surprise.

Mexico (C2) v Costa Rica (A2)
6pm ET/3pm PT - TV: Univision (Spanish)
If only Costa Rica had a few younger players with good experience, because that could really come in handy. Mexico has been the biggest underperformer of the tournament and with two or three players out due to yellow card accumulation; this is going to be a difficult outing for El Tri.

Gold Cup Day 6 recap - D Ro takes Canada to the top

Canada 2-0 Haiti
Group A is over and Canada is surprise winners. Haiti had the better technical skills on the night, but they could not connect with net. Canada had some great breaks and build up, but what was surprising to me was just how bad most of their first touches were. They really could have got two more goals in this one, but they could not set the ball where they needed it to be. There also seemed to be a large amount of confusion in their backline, but Pat Onstad was there to clean things up. Haiti knew they needed a win and when their talent wasn't proving enough to get it, they turned to cheap fouls that almost caused this match to get out of hand. This all lead to Pierre-Richard Bruny throwing a stupid, hard elbow into the face of Canada's Kevin Harmse, thus earning him a red card and killing any small hope his side had of a late come back.

With the win Canada takes first place in Group A and advances to a date with the second place team in Group B in the quarterfinals.
Goals: Dwayne De Rosario (1) 31', (2) pk 35'

Costa Rica 1-0 Guadeloupe
Costa Rica needed nothing less then a full three points to advance and thanks again to the work of Walter Centeno, they got it. Centeno caught Guadeloupe's keeper flat footed as he drove a free kick in from 22 yards. Costa Rica continued to get the better of the chances as they owned the rest of he half. However Guadeloupe came out strong in the second and almost made something out of Costa Rica's collapsible defense. With the intensity of the match suddenly much higher, it turned very physical with numerous stoppages due to shoving and pushing. All this play lead to few cards, but it killed much of the momentum either team was building and the game slipped away.

Costa Rica earns the second spot in the group and will next play in Houston against the second place team in Group C. Guadeloupe still has a chance to advance, but they need either a USA or Trinidad & Tobago win in Group B, or failing that, a Panama win in Group C.
Goals: Walter Centeno (3) 14'

Gold Cup Day 6 - Group A final matches preview

Group A finishes up their matches today and with every team still in the race for a quarterfinal spot, it should be a good evening of soccer. A reminder that the top two spots in the group advance. The third place team has a chance to advance depending on the status of the third place teams in groups B & C. Chances are good that if a team gets 4 points, they will advance, but three might be enough depending on the other groups.

Costa Rica (1pt) vs. Guadeloupe (4pts)
7pm ET/4pm PT - TV: Galavision
Los Ticos find themselves in an unexpected place as they sit at the bottom of Group A and needing a win to keep their hopes of advancing alive. Guadeloupe is shaping up to be the Panama '05 of this year's contest as their status as an unknown in combination with their good defense as allowed them to frustrate opponents, allowing them to slip balls back behind their lines. Look for Costa Rica to push forward heavy in search of an early goal and then go into a bunker backfield.
Predictions: Me Costa Rica 1-1 Guadeloupe, Wife Costa Rica 2-0 Guadeloupe

Haiti (2pts) vs. Canada (3pts)
9pm ET/6pm PT - TV: Galavision
Haiti has been very disappointing so far as they have not shown and real consistency in attack and often miss balls on defense. Canada looked very good in their opener against Costa Rica but sank a bit against Guadeloupe. They won balls in the middle but had very little pressure up top. Pat Onstad is coming back in for goalkeeping duties tonight which is good because Greg Sutton looked a step off on Saturday (might be due to the concussion). This one will get physical, which would seem to favor Haiti but Canada could turn it against them by getting them into card trouble early.
Predictions: Me Haiti 1-2 Canada, Wife Haiti 1-1 Canada

Gold Cup Day 1 - Two games, two surprises

One day in and we already have had two wonderful matches. I thought Group A would provide some entertaining soccer and, at least so far, it has.

Canada 2-1 Costa Rica
Canada pulled off a bit of an upset as they knocked off Costa Rica 2-1 in a match where the Maple Leafs were the aggressors for most of the 90-minutes. Costa Rica came out strong, but about 15-minutes in the tide changed and the Canadians started taking control. They had numerous shots on goal, but they could not finish. The Ticos came out strong again in the second half and got the first goal of the night off a fantastically curled ball from Walter Centeno. But the lead didn't last long as Juan de Guzman found a loose ball in the box to equalize a minute later. De Guzman again made Costa Rica pay when he blasted a long range shot into the upper corner of the goal. The Ticos tried to come back and had a couple good chances late, but they could not do it.

Canada put together some excellent attacks but their defense still has some problems. They had trouble clearing balls and sticking to their man. Costa Rica was much flatter then I've seen them in a long time. Their timing was off and they were not making the most of Canada's mistakes. So is Canada now the number three team in Concacaf? Also, US Soccer must be in denial over this win as they are reporting it as a Costa Rica 2-1 victory.
Goals:
Costa Rica - Walter Centeno (1) 56'
Canada - Juan de Guzman (1) 57', (2) 73'

Guadeloupe 1-1 Haiti
The other match of the night was just as much fun to watch as 'Where the hell is that' Guadeloupe tied a Haitian team that many people thought might be the surprise of the tournament. Haiti was the better team during this match, but Guadaloupe held their own. When they went down on a penalty kick caused by defender Alain Vertot fouling Alexandre Boucicaut, they did no fall apart. Instead, they slowed things down till halftime. Coming out for the second 45, they put together their best soccer of the night and equalized in the 54th. Haiti went all out for the tie in the final 20-minutes, but Guadeloupe held.

One match does not make the tournament and I have a feeling that much like Trinidad & Tobago in the World Cup, Guadeloupe will fade from here, but it is still a good showing. Haiti was surprisingly lacking in creativity as they just tried to force their way into things. Even though I think they are the third best team in this group, they are better then how they played last night.
Goals:
Guadaloupe - Cedrick Fiston (1) 54'
Haiti - Mones Cherry (1) pk 36'

2007 Concacaf Gold Cup - Group A Preview

Concacaf's regional championship kicks off tomorrow with Group A taking the pitch in Miami. Although this group does not carry a heavy weight, it by no means is a push over and might just provide the most entertaining matches of the whole event.

Canada
Fifa rank - 94th
Important players - Dwayne DeRosario, Greg Sutton, Julian DeGuzman
Odds of advancing from group - 2 to 1
Gold Cup Winners - 2000
Canada is a team of the rise but still lack consistent pressure in the midfield and have major problems in defense. However, with Toronto FC finely providing the country with a full on professional team, this is sure to change, but it is going to take some time. Canada is good enough to get out of this group, but they also could fall by the wayside.

Costa Rica
Fifa rank - 52
Important players - Rolando Fonseca, Alonso Solis
Odds of advancing from group - 3 to 2
Costa Rica is the constant underdog with an actual chance in Concacaf and this year is no different. They have excellent technical skills and are crafty at forcing teams to make mistakes plus they have a wonderful ability to almost always get at least one goal a game. That said, they also have a bad habit of having trouble with teams that they really should beat.

Guadeloupe
Fifa rank - ?
Important player - Jocelyn Angloma
Odds of advancing from group - 8 to 1
This team is really just Jocelyn Angloma who is a former French international along with PSG, Marseilles midfielder. Guadeloupe is a department of France, and Angloma was born there, just the reason he is allowed to play. Anyway, he is good, but at 41, I don't think he will be able to carry this team all alone.

Haiti
Fifa rank - 85
Important players - Jean-Jacques Pierre, Noel Fabrice
Odds of advancing from group - 4 to 1
Haiti hasn't had much luck in international soccer for many years and this current squad doesn't look much better. However, they should get a good bounce from the ex-pats living in the Miami area. They will get a few goals but their lack of fitness will lead to difficult times late in games.

Predictions: Me - 1. Costa Rica 2. Canada 3. Haiti 4. Guadeloupe
Wife - 1. Costa Rica 2. Canada 3. Haiti 4. Guadeloupe

Schedule (all games will air on Galavision):
In Miami
June 6 - Costa Rica v Canada (7pm ET/4pm PT), Guadeloupe v Haiti (9pm ET/6pm PT)
June 9 - Canada v Guadeloupe (7pm ET/4pm PT), Haiti v Costa Rica (9pm ET/6pm PT)
June 11 - Costa Rica v Guadeloupe (7pm ET/4pm PT), Haiti v Canada (9pm ET/6pm PT)
