2007 Copa America - USA worst team in tournament

Colombia 1-0 USA
The US men slumped their way out of Copa America tonight with a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of Colombia. The lose gives the side 0 points from their matches with a goal difference of negative 6, thus making us the worst team in the Copa.

As far as tonight's game, sloppy would be kind. The Nats did not sustain pressure at any point nor could they put together more then two or three passes at a time. The good news is they didn't suck as much at finishing chances but the bad news is that has more to do with the lack of such chances then some sudden increase in the team's ability at the end.

The other thing that just glared was how lacking in pressure we were. So many times when Colombia got in front of goal, the team swarmed, making it difficult to clear, but when the US was in the area, there might have been one or maybe two other people around, and they didn't really get involved with the play. If players don't have options, they are going to get picked.

So the red, white and blue dump out of one of the great tournaments. It is a shame, but the greater shame is that it is not a shock. When Bob Bradley released his roster for the tournament, it was obvious that we were heading for a slaughter. There are many reasons why the best were not brought (and some of them have merit), but I have to wonder why we accepted the invitation if we were not even going to try?

One of the biggest problems the US national team face is getting top-quality matches with anyone but Mexico. Other then the World Cup, prior to the Copa, the men have only played three national powers, excluding Mexico, since 2004 (Netherlands Feb '04, England May '05 and Germany March '06). In the Copa, we had a chance to play three big games, including one against Argentina, but the best reward could have come if we had showed something in those matches. If we could have done something down south, our program would have earned some much-needed respect, which would make it easier to convince teams to play us.

Instead, we look like a wet, paper doll. Yes, we can say that we would have done better with our best there, but that is just an excuse. Results are what people remember and in the eyes of the world's soccer community, we look pathetic. If we are not going to bring our best (or at least a roster that stands any sort of a chance) then we should not accept invitations to future Copa Americas. It is much too wonderful of a tournament to disrespect in such a way.

US-Colombia starting lineups

USA (0pts) vs. Colombia (0pts)

The final Copa America match for both these sides is about to kickoff and although it is not important in many ways, this is not a junk match. The US need to get a win out of this to have anything good to say about their trip down south.

Anyway, here are the starting lineups.
USA
GK: Brad Guzan
D: Bobby Boswell, Heath Pearce, Dan Califf, Drew Moor
M: Sacha Kljestan, Kyle Backerman, Ricardo Clark, Justin Mapp
F: Herculez Gomez, Eddie Johnson

Yesterday afternoon Bradley said that no matter what the results from the matches later in the evening, they were not going to cause him to change his lineup. Perhaps that is true, but looking at the list above, I have trouble believing that. If the US still had a chance, would Guzan really be getting the start over Keller? Don't get me wrong, it is great that Guzan is getting the chance but why not just say that if we cannot advance, I will give other people some chanecs?

Anyway, here is Colombia's lineup:
G: Zapata
D: Yepes, Arilaza, Perea, Viafara
M: Castrillion, Torres, Banguero, Zuniga
F: Rodallega, Valoyes

My prediction: USA 1-0 Colombia
The wife's prediction: USA 0-2 Colombia

2007 Copa America - Day 3 - USA 1-4 Argentina - Ouch

USA 1-4 Argentina

The US men have suffered their first loss since the World Cup and did it in a big way. The Nats looked all right during the first half but fell to pieces as the match went along. With very little support available off the bench, Argentina was able to just want the US out. This match reminded me a great deal of the friendly against Germany back in March of last year. In both games we went in with weak sides, played a decent first half and then fell apart just a bit after the hour mark.

Anyway, it was a bad night. Instead of doing a full player grade, I'll just point out the folks that I thought had at least an average or better night: Johnson, Mapp, Conrad. Others had some okay moments, but overall it really doesn't matter as it was a painful game to watch. That said, at least they didn't fall as bad as Colombia did against Paraguay. Then again, the US face Paraguay on Monday.

Goals:
US: Johnson (1) 9'
Argentina: Crespo (1) 12', (2) 65', Aimar (1) 79', Tevez (1) 86'

Paraguay 5-0 Colombia
This one became an official sack beating late in the match as Paraguay got three goals in the final ten minutes. The first half was a snore in this one but then Paraguay took charge in the second. Colombia had a couple of chances but nothing to cause worry. The score is about equal to the play on the pitch.
Goals:
Paraguay: Roque Santa Cruz (1) 30', (2) 46', (3) 80', Cabanas (1) 85', (2) 88'

Colombia removes itself from 2014 World Cup race; South Africa wants to spread the love

Colombia has made it official, they do not want to be considered for host of the 2014 World Cup, leaving Brazil as the sole bidder for the world's biggest event.

Sepp Blatter described Colombia's move last month as a publicity stunt, which caused the country's president to respond, "Before he can say that, he has to get rid of all the mafia who have infected football, and respect Colombia." Looks like both of them were right.

In 2010 news, South Africa wants FIFA to change the rule that requires teams to live in the country during the World Cup. They say this is Africa's World Cup and that surrounding countries should get a bit of fun.

There are two main reasons South Africa wants this. First is to share the fun of having the world cup, but second, and more important in my view, they hope to alleviate some of the demand for housing. If fans follow their team back to Mozambique or Swaziland, then South Africa doesn't have to come up with a place for them to stay or to keep them safe.

This seems like an easy choice for FIFA to make.
