2007 MLS Week 10 Predictions
The Gold Cup might be getting all the attention, but MLS is still plowing along. Thankfully it is a light schedule this weekend with just four games taking place, yet these four games could greatly change the dynamic of the season.
Los Angeles Galaxy (1-3-3) vs. FC Dallas (5-5-1)
Saturday - 8:30pm ET
TV: Direct Kick, HDNet
Internet: MLStv
Gold Cup matches happening at the same time: End of Canada v Guadeloupe, start of Haiti v Costa Rica
Will LA have enough players to field a full 11? Can FCD finally get their first clean sheet against a team that averages just one goal per game and only has one goal in three road games? Dallas should have everything they need to beat the stuffing out of LA. They still are having trouble getting the ball forward, but with the lack of options LA has, there should be enough openings for the Hoops to push through.
Predictions: Me LA 0-2 FCD, Wife LA 2-1 FCD
Chivas USA (3-3-2) vs. Chicago Fire (4-4-2)
Saturday - 8:30pm ET
TV: Fox Soccer Channel (30-minute pre & post show), FSE
Gold Cup matches happening at the same time: End of Canada v Guadeloupe, start of Haiti v Costa Rica
Will Chivas finally start producing on the road or will Chicago continue to improve and snag even more points in the month of June? The Fire got their first win in a long time last weekend, but did not look very convincing doing it. Their midfield is still a mess so the Goats will have chances. However, Chivas is a side that needs lots and lots of chances before the make a side pay.
Predictions: Me CV 1-1 CF, Wife CV 1-3 CF
New York Red Bulls (6-2-2) vs. DC United (3-3-2)
Sunday - 1:00pm ET
TV: TeleFutura
Gold Cup matches happening at the same time: None
Is this New York team finally good enough to beat Bruce Arena's old club in DC? Is DC really better or have they just been getting lucky these last five games? Everything points to this being the most amazing game of the weekend as they result will either crown a new king or return order to the universe. Neither side is hurting much from international callups, but NY has some injury woes. DC's defense has looked much better during their current run but are they good enough to shut down Juan Pablo Angel? On the other end, will DC find a way to slip their less then wonderful attack past one of the best defenses in the league? New York has finished their chances all season long, which I think will be the difference in this one. As strange as this is for me to type, I think New York is getting ready to best United.
Predictions: Me NY 2-1 DC, Wife NY 3-1 DC
Houston Dynamo (4-5-1) vs. Columbus Crew (1-3-5)
Sunday - 5:00pm ET
TV: Direct Kick
Internet: MLStv
Gold Cup matches happening at the same time: End of Honduras v Mexico, start of Panama v Cuba
Can Houston continue their run and scream up to second place in the West? Will the Crew shock everyone and start finding goal? The Dynamo is in a very happy place at the moment. They lost five of their first seven, but thanks to a two game winning streak, they are closing in on the top spot in the West. With all their big names gone, they have had to turn to the bench and so far, it has been a great turn. Joseph Ngwenya is proving himself to be something to watch up top and Stuart Holden is becoming a wonder sub. With Frankie Hejduk off at the Gold Cup and Danny O'Rourke suspended, Columbus will be hard pressed to match the men in orange.
Predictions: Me HD 2-0 CC, Wife HD 2-1 CC
So how could these games alter the season?
- If FCD beats LA and Chivas and DC win and Houston get at least a tie, LA will be 8 points away from the final playoff spot.
- If LA beat FCD and Houston beat the Crew, the Dynamo will sit on top of the West.
- If NY, Chicago and Columbus win, DC will be tired for fifth place in the East, 6-points behind Chicago.
- If Chivas and DC lose and the Crew win, they will move into a three-way tie (on points) for the final playoff spot.
Any of these outcomes could change the whole narrative of the league. Then again, since this is MLS, the narrative will probably change again next week.
