MLS US Open Cup qualifying - NY vs. LA
New York Red Bull vs. LA Galaxy
10:30pm EST
The second round of MLS US Open Cup qualifying starts today as New York travels to LA to take on the Galaxy in a 'win and you're in' game.
The Galaxy have had a lot of time off over the last 30 days, so they should be well rested while the Red Bulls got beat up late on Saturday against Real Salt Lake. This could be an outstanding match as both teams have the talent to win. LA will need something from Donovan, but it will also be interesting to see what 'not ready for MLS' starters will get the nod.
The Galaxy has a wonderful history in the US Open Cup, having won it twice and been runners-up two other times. These are the games that often refocus the club and lead to better league play.
Meanwhile, New York might just be at the dawn of a new era but few will believe it unless they finally win some silverware. All of three domestic cups, the US Open has the least amount of zing to it, but it would still make for a great addition to the trophy closet. Look for Arena to have at least 8 regular starters on the pitch in the hope of getting a couple goals early so they can walk away with a win.
As seems to be the custom, no one will know this match is taking place as there is no television or radio broadcast available. If you are not in the LA area, you can follow the game on match-tracker.
My prediction is NY 1-2 LA in overtime.
