Thursday Night Soccer - New England v DC United

New England Revolution (2-1-1) vs. DC United (0-3-0)
7:00pm ET
TV: ESPN2

When MLS first organized the schedule, they must have thought this would be the first big show down on Thursday night. Surely DC and New England would be standing tall in the East, thus making this something fantastic to watch. Turns out it will be something fantastic to watch but not for the preseason reason.

DC enters this match without a win and with a number of players performing far below where they should be. Brian Carroll is a mess out there and the whole of their attacking is unraveling. With big red panic lights going off all over United nation, this is just about a must win game (a true must win will come Sunday if they lose tonight). Yet one must remember, this is MLS and with 8 of 13 teams making it to the post season, you can lose a lot and still make it through.

The Revolution, on the other hand, are playing their normal style, i.e. frustrate the opposition with their defense and finding just enough space to squeeze in a goal on attack. They are still adjusting to the absence of Clint Dempsey, but are improving their technical skill just about every game. Matt Reis is again standing tall in goal and Taylor Twellman is finding ways to get some net. This all puts them in a comfortable spot. This comfort will allow the Revs to make gold out of any mistakes DC makes, and the way they have been playing, there will be mistakes.

My guess is United will come out strong, but New England will wait them out and at some point around the half hour match get the game winner.
Prediction: Me NE 1-0 DC, Wife NE 1-0 DC
