2007 MLS Week 18 Power Ratings
Most of the teams saw action this week and while the top teams in each conference lost, there was still relatively little movement. That will change if it happens again next week, but for now, here is the way I see the league:
1. Houston Dynamo (Last week - 1) - Every team is allowed a flub against a lesser opponent now and then, but they need to make sure this does not become a habit. With their scheduled pretty tight over the next few weeks, exhaustion might be their toughest competition.
2. FC Dallas (2) - They are still lacking in attack but the work of Ray Burse Jr. in goal more then makes up for it. However, shutting out Colorado is not the hardest of tests.
3. DC United (4) - Their game against New England was a full effort all over the pitch. United still has some defensive concerns and need to push their midfield a little harder but they look to be on the right track.
4. New England Revolution (3) - Near perfect match against KC followed by a punch of blah against DC. Simple mistakes can bring down even the best.
5. Columbus Crew (5) - Columbus is still a team lurking, just waiting to strike. They are getting much better at holding the ball which is a needed step towards winning.
6. New York Red Bull (6) - The Red Bulls took the week off yet still conceded 8 goals. Congrats on the new training center.
7. Kansas City Wizards (7) - They applied some good pressure but still need more scoring options then just Eddie Johnson. The good news is their defense is looking promising.
8. Chivas USA (8) - No MLS games for the team from LA without Beckham. In fact, their play has improved so much, they get next week off as well.
9. Toronto FC (9) - It looks like they have a goalkeeper but if their backups can own more matches like they did against LA, they might not need anyone in front of the net.
10. Chicago Fire (11) - The Fire have had no form in the final third all season, but that is starting to change. They are actually taking shots now and Blanco is proving to be a strong manager on the pitch.
11. Colorado Rapids (10) - Even when they are the better club, they can't get goals or points. The whole let's try to win without scoring a goal plan doesn't seem to be working much for them.
12. Los Angeles Galaxy (12) - Wow, was that a terrible game in Canada. They were lazy, uncreative and boring. If it wasn't for Cannon in goal, it would have been a horrible night on the scoreboard as well.
13. Real Salt Lake (13) - REAL WIN! REAL WIN!!! I don't know if I will get to type that again this season so I thought I would enjoy it. Actually, Real is looking much better over the last few weeks (since the Beckerman trade), so they might just surprise a few other sides before everything is over and done with. If so, watch out LA and Colorado.
And now week eighteen is forgotten.
