Vancouver Whitecaps win USL Championship
Vancouver blew away the Rochester Raging Rhinos on Saturday night to win the USL First-Division Championship. This is the first title for the Whitecaps.
The Rhinos came out strong in the initial 20-minutes, but could not breakdown the Whitecaps defense. Slowly Vancouver opened up the game. Their ball control got better as did their ability to play the full field. This helped them find the holes in the Rhinos lineup and they exploited these holes right before halftime when Joey Gjertsen got what turned out to be the game winner (the goal was credited as an own goal due to it bouncing off Nate Craft).
The second half saw Vancouver open it up even more as Rochester became timid. Once Tony Donatelli scored the second goal in the 55th, it was really pretty much over. The Rhinos had a couple of good runs, but for the most part, they were lost at midfield.
Sita-Taty Matondo put the final nail in the coffin in the 86th minute, when he easily beat keeper Scott Vallow in a one-on-one.
Overall, it was a wonderful outing for the Whitecaps as they grew as the game went on.
Vancouver Whitecaps 3-0 Rochester Raging Rhinos
