Big final weekend for USL Division 1
The USL First Division regular season comes to an end this weekend with two playoff spots still open and four teams fighting for them.
Six teams make it into the playoffs with the top two teams getting a bye during the first round. So far the Montreal Impact, Rochester Raging Rhinos, Charleston Battery and the Vancouver Whitecaps have already taken their spots. Montreal has clinched one of the top two spots. Here is the table for the teams in or still in the hunt for the playoffs:
Team - GP - Pts
x Montreal - 27 - 50
x Rochester - 26 - 46
x Charleston - 27 - 45
x Vancouver - 26 - 40
Miami FC - 26 - 38
Seattle - 26 - 34
Puerto Rico - 26 - 34
Atlanta - 25 - 32
x- playoff spot clinched
Each team plays 28 games.
This weekend sees a mad dash to the finish as all four teams going for the last two spots play at least 2 games.
Atlanta plays tonight against Portland, Saturday against Seattle and Sunday against Vancouver. All matches are road games.
Puerto Rico and Miami play two games. The first one is Friday at 8pm ET and will be carried live on Fox Soccer Channel. The other game is Sunday. If Miami gets just one point from these matches, they will clinch a spot.
Seattle travels to Vancouver on Friday and finishes the regular season at home against Atlanta.
There are many different ways this could play out. If you are a Seattle or Atlanta fan, you will want to hope for two victories for Miami, which could mean that the Seattle-Atlanta result would determine the final playoff spot.
The other race is for the second spot. Rochester welcomes the last place Minnesota Thunder to town on Saturday. If the Rhinos fail to get a win, then Charleston will have a chance to snag second when Rochester comes to town on Sunday. The Battery would need nothing short of a win to make that happen, but with the Rhinos playing the day before, anything could happen.
