US WNT names training roster for match with Mexico
US WNT head coach Greg Ryan named his 24 player training camp roster today. Training for the Oct. 23rd game against Mexico will begin the day after their Oct. 16th match against Australia.
From the press release:
U.S. head coach Greg Ryan made just three changes from the California training camp roster, bringing in 2004 Olympian Heather O’Reilly, midfielder Leslie Osborne and goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart, who has two of the seven shutouts earned this year by the U.S. team. O’Reilly is in the midst of a stellar junior season for top-ranked University of North Carolina where she leads the undefeated and untied Tar Heels in scoring with 11 goals and eight assists. The striker scored her fifth career goal for the national team on July 10 against Ukraine. Osborne will be playing just her second match for the U.S. after major ankle surgery as she made her return earlier this year on July 24 against Iceland.
The roster features all of the USA’s active veteran players, including 2004 Olympic gold medallists Heather Mitts, Cat Reddick, Shannon Boxx, Aly Wagner, Angela Hucles, Kristine Lilly, Kate Markgraf and Abby Wambach. In addition, forward Tiffeny Milbrett returns from a six-week stint with Swedish club Sunanna SK, while the USA’s leading scorer this year, Christie Welsh (seven goals, one assist) and third-leading scorer Danielle Fotopoulos (four goals) were also named to the roster. Rounding out a talented and dynamic group of forwards is two-time Olympian and three-time Women’s World Cup participant Shannon MacMillan, the USA’s sixth all-time leading scorer with 60 career goals.
Full training roster:
GOALKEEPERS (3): Nicole Barnhart, Jen Branam, Hope Solo
DEFENDERS (7): Nancy Augustyniak, Kylie Bivens, Tina Frimpong, Amy LePeilbet, Kate Markgraf, Heather Mitts, Cat Reddick
