Revolution looking for stadium deal near Boston
The New England Revolution are looking at Somerville (about 2 miles Northwest of downtown Boston) as a site for their new soccer specific stadium.
Over the past 5 years, the Revs have been one of the best teams in MLS but their attendance numbers have always been low. With Foxbourgh a bit of a drive out of town (about 18 miles south of Boston), it is hard to catch the casual fan, however a stadium close to downtown might just be what they need to turn things around.
Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution and Somerville officials have held preliminary discussions about building a 20,000-plus seat soccer stadium on a site not far from Charlestown, Mayor Joseph Curtatone confirmed. This site is a wonderful location as it is close to the center city, has access to the highway, not far from the airport and has good public transportation options.
The 100-acre tract of vacant lots, industrial buildings and rail lines off Innerbelt Road near Interstate 93 has long been targeted by Somerville for redevelopment.

The casual fan? What about those of us who drive one hundred miles or more to catch a Revs game? And since this is my obsession in life, what about the parking?
If the Revolution want an urban location in order to attract higher attendance and publicity, then the place they should be talking to is Providence, RI. Yes, Providence, New England's second largest city, a city of diverse cultures and ethnic groups who love soccer. And, it is easy to get into and out of. Furthermore, the Revolution would be the professional team in town, as both the Providence Bruins and Pawtucket Red Sox are minor league teams. It's a win-win for club and city.
The Revs are the best and deserve their own soccer stadium. Great idea to put it in Somerville because of the high population density. In fact, I worry that 20K seats will not be enough if Somerville's where the Rev's relocate! Gilette is too far away from Boston and its hugeness detracts from the excitement of the game.
