MLS Week 28 Recap or How to get Everything Wrong
I thought my days of getting all the picks wrong were over. Turns out, no.
The MetroStars did what they needed to do and got three points in DC. Youri Djorkaeff and Amado Guevara had excellent nights. For United, Freddy Adu continued to look strong but they could not stop the momentum of a team trying to make the playoffs. DC 1 - 2 MetroStars
KC is now winless in their last seven matches. For a while there in the first half it looked like it was going to be the Wizards night. They went up 2-0 thanks to goals by Josh Wolff and Jimmy Conrad but that's when New England came screaming back. In the 41st, Jose Cancela planted a free kick into the back of the net to cut the lead in half. The Revs kept the pressure on and just 13 minutes in the second half, Clint Dempsey found the rebound of a Khano Smith shot and took it home from short range. KC ended up with one point and tied with the MetroStars for the fourth spot while New England clinched tope honors in the East. KC 2 - 2 NE
The hero of the night for Columbus was second-string goaltender Matt Jordan. In the 18th minute he made a big save on a penalty kick that kept the Fire off the board. Chicago would end up scoring first thanks to a great effort by Chris Rolfe and Chad Barrett that resulted in a Jesse Marsch goal but that lead would not stand for long. Just four minutes later Fire defender Gonzalo Segares brought down Crew forward Jamal Sutton in the penalty area setting up the second penalty kick of the night. Simon Elliott calmly stepped up and made the shot. The Crew would continue fighting and 20 minutes later Eric Vasquez got the winning goal. With the loss, Chicago can do no better then third place. For the Crew, it gives them some pride. Fire 1 - 2 Crew
There were no goals and very little offense in Dallas as they shared a point with Colorado. FCD was without many, many players, so they should be all right with the result. However, they missed a chance to secure second place honors. The Rapids also missed the chance to challenge LA and Dallas for a higher placement in the playoffs. Now they get to meet San Jose in the first round. FCD 0 - Colorado 0
San Jose finished up the season without losing a game at home even though they tried to on Saturday night. They were up 2-0 at the half, thanks in large part to the play of Dwayne De Rosario, but with so many starters out (6), they could not play a full 90 minutes. Real Salt Lake managed to claw their way back into it thanks to a Kevin Novak cross that went just over Dwayne De Rosario's head and into the bottom right corner of goal. Andy Williams was able to tie it up nine minutes later when he sent a cross by Jamie Watson into the net. With the point San Jose win the Supporter's Shield while Real Salt Lake get their first point since August 6th. San Jose 2 - 2 Real Salt Lake
