Brad Guzan not moving to Aston Villa, denied work permit

Chivas USA and MLS Goalkeeper of the year Brad Guzan has been denied a work permit in England due to his lack of national team appearances, thus he will not be joining Aston Villa.

The offer Chivas and MLS had accepted was worth a £2million ($4m) transfer fee. Celtic has also approached Guzan.

Not a good day for a very talented goalkeeper. Even worse, with just five national team caps to his name, he has a long way to go before he will reach the 75% threshold. However, if he does end up staying in MLS, he should be able to get some of those caps over the next year in World Cup Qualifiers.

This should be no surprise. The surprising thing was that despite how much the media and bloggers on this side of the pond seem to follow things in England I didn't see one mentioning that Guzan will automatically be turned down for a work permit and that the question was if he could get one on appeal. Villa move too late in the transfer window to try for that appeal. Will we see Villa or Celtic make a move in June?
